During a recent assignment for Old Port Magazine, I photographed a variety of businesses on Washington Avenue in Portland, Maine. The Drifter's Wife and their sister wine shop Maine & Loire are a quiet, calming oasis in the midst of a hustling city. As soon as I walked in, I felt a bit like I was stepping into a Parisian cafe and could have spent a couple of hours chatting, sipping on a glass of wine, and reading a good book in their window seat.

Peter and Orenda, the married couple who opened both businesses, are so knowledgeable about wine that they pair each bottle with a humorous recommendation on what to eat or do while drinking it. My favorite? The bottle that goes best with changing the world's dirtiest diaper. That would have come in handy for me 8 years ago...

I've been back multiple times for my weekend wine selection and I highly recommend stopping in for a bite to eat, too!
